‘A KID’S LIFE’ What would “Sesame Street” be like without Oscar the Grouch? A possible answer is “A Kid’s Life,” which recently opened at the York Theater Company. Although this production also has upbeat songs, cheery lessons in the workings of the world and adults dressed in oversize fuzzy costumes, it features little of the inspired wit and occasionally acerbic observations that have made “Sesame Street” so ingenious. While clouds sometimes gather over that neighborhood, the nameless little town in “A Kid’s Life” is virtually all sunshine, all the time.
Not that children under 7 are likely to mind. Even though they were absent from the performance I attended (bad weather had caused school audiences to cancel), it was easy to imagine them enthralled. “A Kid’s Life” follows a small boy named Zack (Carlos Avilas, above right) and his dog, Starsky (Yoav Levin), as they meet Zoe (Ashley Wallace) and introduce her to the neighborhood. Over the course of an hour little theatergoers have the opportunity to bat balloons through the audience, clap and sing to the music and shout instructions to the actors.
The show, which sometimes seems more like a participatory concert (Cynthia Riddle and Peter Hunziker’s book is thin), embodies a certain 1960s feel. You can easily envision the folksy pop score by Corey Leland (also the lyricist) being belted out by the Association or the Turtles. Peace signs are flashed at the end, and the action includes tree hugging (literally), as Zack and Zoe meet Bart (Joshua Greenwood, above left), an orange tree.
The most hilarious moment soon follows, as the huge Starsky ambles over to Bart and serenely lifts his leg. I don’t know if this was in the script or the idea of the director, Keith Markinson, but it displayed a refreshing irreverence the show could use more of. Oscar, would you consider visiting? ‘ARCHAEOLOGY ZONE: DISCOVERING TREASURES FROM PLAYGROUNDS TO PALACES’ (Saturday through Thursday) Children will step into the shoes of an explorer like Indiana Jones in this new exhibition at the Jewish Museum, but the adventures will be purely scholarly. Still, there is plenty of excitement in analyzing artifacts like a jar handle, a clay jug and a bangle, and figuring out the purpose behind ancient pieces like a Greek helmet and a bull-shaped vessel. This interactive show also includes a recreated home from the Ottoman period (about 1900), where young archaeologists can dress in costume. (Through June 15, 2009.) BEST OF NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL (Saturday and Sunday) Where can young cinephiles see independent film that’s refreshing and creative but still age-appropriate? This festival has always been a reliable source, and this weekend and next it will present programs of highlights at Symphony Space. At 11 a.m. “Kid Flix Mix 2,” for ages 3 to 8, offers 12 shorts, including Bill Plympton’s “Fan and the Flower,” an unusual animated love story, and Sheldon Cohen’s “I Want a Dog,” whose title explains it all. At 2 p.m. “N.Y.I.C.F.F. Party Mix” caters to ages 8 to 16 with selections like “The Ten Steps,” Brendan Muldowney’s brief and bloodless but deliciously spooky thriller. ‘THE BLUE CARBUNCLE WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES’ AND ‘THE GIFT OF THE MAGI’ (Friday and Saturday) You may wonder just what Sherlock Holmes has to do with Christmas, but that mystery — along with that of the plot — will be solved in the first play of a holiday double bill presented by J B Theatrical Productions in association with Workshop Theater Company. In “The Blue Carbuncle,” Holmes and Watson pursue a case involving a jewel and a Christmas goose. The second show, “The Gift of the Magi,” is based on O. ‘CHALLAH-LUJAH’ (Christmas Day) That’s no misspelling. Joshua Nelson is an African-American Jew, and he celebrates both his personal traditions in his music, which combines gospel and soul with Judaica. CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF MANHATTAN (Saturday and Sunday) The museum is offering musical merrymaking, both professional and homemade. Saturday at 2 and 3 p.m. the Broadway Kids, young performers from shows like “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast,” will give a holiday show of songs. On Saturday and Sunday, at 11 a.m., noon and 2, 3 and 4 p.m., children can hear the story “The Little Drummer Boy” and make their own drums from paper. ‘CUT TO THE CHASE’ (Friday through Sunday, and Christmas Day through Thursday) This is an appropriate title for a show in which no words are wasted: Parallel Exit, a vaudevillian company, creates theater inspired by the silent films of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. But while there’s no dialogue, there are plenty of sound effects. If this backstage farce is anything like the troupe’s 2005 “This Way That Way,” it should be hilarious. (Through Dec. 30.) The two are inventively combined in the PBS animated series “Cyberchase” and in this exhibition at the New York Hall of Science, which is based on the television show and presents puzzles and games that turn fractions, algebra, geometry and other mathematical subjects into fun. DINOSAUR ENCOUNTER (Daily, except Christmas) The Staten Island Zoo will look like Jurassic Park for the next few weeks, thanks to Kokoro Dinosaurs, a Los Angeles company that makes life-size robotic models of these prehistoric creatures. Expect to see species including the apatosaurus, the pteranodon and the tenontosaurus — moving and vocalizing — at this exhibition, as well as their present-day descendants in the zoo’s new 13,500-square-foot reptile wing. ‘KIDS & YIDDISH: ODE TO OY!’ (Sunday) The Village People meet the Chosen People in this annual holiday revue, which combines sendups of popular culture with lighthearted instruction in Yiddish. This year’s edition has a skit about colors (“Gray’s Anatomy”) and a routine about a ventriloquist’s puppet who strikes out on her own. (She’s no dummy.) ‘KLEZ FOR KIDS’ (Christmas Day) So maybe they’re a little young to be married. But children can still have fun playing the part of a bride, groom or guest in the re-creations of a shetl wedding that will conclude these concerts. The first family programs at the Museum at Eldridge Street in the newly restored historic Eldridge Street Synagogue, the events will feature Greg Wall and his band Klezmerfest, Yiddish lessons and hora dancing. ‘LILLY’S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE’ (Saturday and Sunday) Mousy doesn’t mean unfashionable in Lilly’s book, and certainly not in Kevin Henkes’s. This multimedia production from Manhattan Children’s Theater follows Lilly, a mouse, in several of the adventures Mr. Henkes, an author and illustrator, has created for her in his picture books. Adapted by Kevin Kling, they include the incident involving Lilly’s snappy purple purse, a kind of wallet-cum-music-box that’s a little too tuneful for school. (Through Feb. 3.) ‘THE LITTLE MERMAID’ (Saturday, Sunday and Thursday) This musical adaptation, from Literally Alive Children’s Theater, preserves Hans Christian Andersen’s distinctly not happily-ever-after ending, but it is far from a somber affair. With music by Mark McGee and book and lyrics by Brenda Bell, it includes rousing numbers like a rafter-rattling blues turn by the Fish Witch. Children can also help decorate the stage by taking part in a preshow art workshop. (Through Dec. 30). Based on the animated feature of the same title, the show features a discarded Christmas bulb and a fatherless 8-year-old named Timmy. As you might imagine, a holiday blackout is involved. Corey Leland was standing in line at a “.99 Cent” Store one day when he noticed the tension between a mother and her 5-year old son. Intrigued, as he often is by such moments, the California-based singer-songwriter approached the woman. Corey said, “Excuse me, I’m writing songs for kids about your boy’s age,” he recalls. “What would you want kids to hear in a song? More especially, what would you want to hear so that you wouldn’t have to get upset with your child? A song that would resolve the issue in theory before it even began?”
The woman thought about it and said,” Be careful what words you use because my kid calls me stupid in public sometimes!” Corey Leland took her comments to heart and a song speaking to a mother’s very concerns was born! The song written by Corey especially for kids and their parents is called “Communication, Consideration (It’s Right To Be Polite)” was one of the 12 tracks to appear on his children’s music debut, “Corey Leland Presents The Insects Rock! Songs You Want Your Kids To Hear,” a collection of sunny pop-rock songs with a giddy 1970’s retro style and lovingly crafted positive affirmations and practical advice to help kids navigate the glorious and confounding process of growing up.
From the importance of teamwork and healthy self expression to more pragmatic considerations such as potty training and putting away one’s toys to the celebration of delights as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! Corey Leland’s music honors, with genuine sincerity, the experience of being a child. His songs, after all, are sparked by his own recollections, babysitting experiences and the real life requests of parents whose hopes, frustrations and joys he is always eager to hear and write songs about.
Corey Leland says it best. “I’m always listening to conversations that moms and dads are having,” he admits. “There’s a sense of un-fulfillment seemingly built in to the human condition, a constant "carrot and the stick" type seeking externally for the happiness that is always just beyond reach. It is my intention to teach kids to feel fulfilled and content from within, from their own being, so they’re not externally driven and always looking to other people for approval.”
With 3 volumes already out (check out Vol 3 cover above), the latest, “Making New Friends,” was released last year, and a 4th on the way, Corey Leland is aware that he’s both filling a void and bucking a trend, delivering sweetly uplifting songs that aren’t too saccharine or silly for the parents who will be playing them, or too ‘dumbed-down’ for the children who will be listening. Corey Leland never wanted it to be just for kids! He’d rather it be for all ages.
You can refer, as an example, to one song he wrote that recognizes the importance of having a symbol of security – “It’s More Than A Blanket To Me” fits the preschool market but because it’s about how everyone looks to something for comfort to get them through their day, it blows adult minds too! Corey Leland can see parents sitting there thinking about what it is that they might need to let go of. #1 kids songwriter Corey Leland is also a spiritual teacher who’s been walking his path for 18 years, has no children of his own and never intended to write children’s music.
More than 3 years ago, however, he was writing and singing adult-oriented pop with the same retro flair when he asked God to use him in a way that would most benefit the World. The prayer was answered when Director Keith Markinson found Corey Leland to write the lyrics and music for all the songs in the musical A KID'S LIFE! "A Kid’s Life” is a family musical that encourages kids to think positively and has been drawing rave reviews since it kicked off a national tour with its December debut in Southern California.
“The Insects Rock!” series flowed naturally from that experience, Leland’s cast of colorful creatures drawn deliberately from the tradition of classic 4-piece bands like The Beatles. “Sparky is more like Shaggy in ‘Scooby-Doo’ – always hungry and thinking about food. Daisy, the butterfly, she is the brain. Sunshine the ladybug is very optimistic. Harrison the cricket, he’s the philosophical mystic,” says Leland.
“We have the human urges with Sparky, and the mind and soul and deeper mystical sense with Harrison; the brain with Daisy, and then there’s the heart with Sunshine – which adds up with all the love. You put them all together and you have one integrated whole person!” People ask children’s songwriter Corey Leland why it is called “The Insects Rock!’
Here is Leland’s answer: “Adults tower over small children and small children tower over insects and to have such empowering wise messages coming from something as seemingly small, vulnerable and insignificant as a bug; I think psychologically there’s something there. If a child at age 2, 3, 4, or 5 can learn to have a respect and sensitivity toward something as small as an insect, they’re going to have a greater sense of care for dogs, cats, their brothers, sisters, classmates and of course, themselves.”
Plans are already in the works for a TV series built around the Insects as a famous pop band whose interactions with their fans help them resolve everyday problems and experience greater harmony in their lives. “I see it as being blatantly helpful and supplemental parenting, like a multi-vitamin for the psyche” says Leland of his work.
